Long time no see!

A thesis is 33% research, 33% development, 33% making powerpoint slides :p

Hey, it’s been a while!

A lot of things happened these last months! First of all, I finally defended my thesis, and it went really well. However, it was a lot of work for many weeks to be ready on time (I first made a 90+ slide presentation, for a session of 45 minutes…).

Nonetheless, the last weeks were pretty heavy because in the meantime, I was hired in a US company (with a french R&D office) dealing with strong authentication for banks and online gaming, VASCO Data Security. They used to create hardware tokens generating one-time passwords and e-signatures, and are now moving their software to mobile phones. Many existing two-step authentication apps use their APIs, like Blizzard authenticator for Android and iPhone.  I’m responsible for the Windows Phone 8 port of their app (yup, no Android for me!). That’s nice, since I played a lot with WPF/Silverlight some years ago, and I really liked the ways things are done in C#: delegates, lambdas, closures, LINQ. A lot of APIs are really nice to work with in C# (some points are less nice, like the lack of checked exceptions).

Finally, I’m also actively looking for a real house with my wife, to get closer to the office and stop wasting hours in the traffic jam. For all these reasons, I got simply no time at all for many weeks. Please excuse me, and be sure that I have a lot of things in my backpack!

  • LIL’ FX EDITOR
A not-yet released lightweight particle editor. As always, I made a loader for LibGDX, but I think I’ll also port it to XNA to use it on Windows Phones.
  • UNIVERSAL TWEEN ENGINE 7
The new version of the engine will see a revised core, with an official C# port (callbacks as delegates… oh god I love that stuff). Also, expect more options and parameters for easing functions, as well as bugfixes for every opened bug. Oh, and we’ll move to GitHub too :)
  • PHYSICS BODY EDITOR 3
At last! I talked about this one more than a year ago I think! I have a lot of ideas for it. Some are already implemented (dynamic objects with custom joints), other are not (test environment with script support). I really want to complete it, and I’ll need it for my next games, so don’t worry, it’s not buried down!
  • UNIVERSAL CSS ENGINE 2
I never officially released it, but it’s already fully usable in the repository. With it, anyone can skin a Swing Java application with CSS stylesheets. This second revision supports a lot of interesting features, like pseudo-classes (:hover, :active and :focus adds mouse listeners where it should for you!).
  • FIRST GAME: SWING
I’m still working of my first game XD I lost a big commit history (I don’t know why), but I’m working hard to get things back to their last known state. But the good news for you is that I’m strongly thinking about releasing the engine of the game as open-source, so anyone could use it to quickly get started with that kind of game. It will be my 2013 tribute to LibGDX, among other things.
  • A SHITTON OF OTHER STUFF
The Tween Studio, the Level Editor, the Quick UI Editor, the Sliding Layout library, and a lot of new tutorials! You won’t see everything in 2013 (I suppose), but as I said, there is a lot in my backpack, I just wish I had more time to work on all of that :)

  • Content de te revoir.

Bravo pour ta soutenance et ton nouveau poste.

  • Great news! And i’m happy that you are back. I really thought that you quit all your hot projects. :) Luckily i was wrong. Congratz to your graduation and your new job.

    • The projects are not dead at all, but I really needed some time to be dedicated to the end of the thesis and the start of the new job. I’ll update the projects as soon as possible to bring them to life again :D

  • Félicitation pour ta réussite!

    • Merci bien. Je me demande si avoir passé du temps à développer des projets open-source n’a pas plus joué en ma faveur qu’avoir fait une thèse. Je serai tenté de dire que si, comme quoi l’open-source a du bon :)

  • Congrats! Glad to hear your success in many areas of life =D

  • Nice to see you’re back :D Awesome stuff you do, so I think the libgdx community missed you xD I did at least!

I have used so much the tween engine that I couldn’t develop games without it anymore, and that’s all thanks to you :)

  • Nice to see you back Aurelien, Hope all goes well in the new job my friend, will try and catch ya on Google Talk at some point.

  • When are you releasing Physics Body Editor 3? I’d like something that handles custom joints.

  • Can you at least push the code changes you have made thus far to your repos/codebases so we as a community can see the direction you are going or help you out?

    • Yes! But I don’t even have the time to answer my mails and the comments here currently :/
The Fx Editor is ready to be used, I would love to push it to github. I’m trying my best, be sure, but I had a lot more time during the thesis I guess :)

  • Hi Aurelien,

can you share any eta for the VASCO Windows Phone 8 app?
    Thank you!

    Kind regards,
    Gia

  • I hardly leave a response, but I browsed a great deal of responses on %BLOG_TITLE%. I do have a few questions for you if it’s okay. Is it simply me or does it give the impression like some of the comments look like they are coming from brain dead people? :-P And, if you are writing on additional places, I’d like to follow everything new you have to post. Would you post a list of every one of your shared pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?|

  • This is a topic which is close to my heart… Take care! Where are your contact details though?

  • I want to to thank you for this wonderful read!! I certainly enjoyed every bit of it. I have you book marked to check out new stuff you post…

  • The subsequent time I learn a weblog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I imply, I know it was my choice to read, however I truly thought youd have something fascinating to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you possibly can repair if you werent too busy looking for attention.

  • I love your work, it has made my life immeasurably more productive.

Got anything to say? Go ahead and leave a comment!
